Strategies for Brainstorming Name Ideas

Sometimes thinking of a name comes naturally. Other times, ideas feel like they’re on the other side of the planet. If you’re struggling to come up with a name, you can try out some brainstorming techniques.

A simple but helpful one is to play some word games. What words come to mind when you think of your business? Maybe you think of words like “excellence” or “memories” or “luxury” or “simplicity.” Once you have a list of words that remind you of your business, make some word associations. What words do you immediately think of when you hear those words? This technique might sound simple, but it could spark the perfect inspiration for your name.

Some business owners also try to “focus group” their name ideas by asking friends, family members, and even potential clients what they think. Pitching your name ideas to people can get helpful feedback, letting you know if your name is catchy, confusing, or perfect. They might even suggest the perfect name for you.

How to Use a Business Name Generator

If you’re still drawing a blank, you can also look into using an event planning business name generator. With a few keywords, these tools can help suggest names for you. Type in your keywords, choose a few options you like, and then customize them to fit your needs. Then you’ll be well on your way to having a new perfect name.

A word of caution, however: business name generators aren’t perfect. They don’t check for name availability. That’s your responsibility. Before you dive into business with any name (including one produced by a name generator), you need to check if the name is available and viable. We’ll cover how in the next section.

Validating Your Business Name Choice

Regardless of how you come up with your name, it’s essential to check that your name is valid. This process starts by running a business name search. Every state protects the names of registered businesses (LLCs, corporations, etc.) for exclusive use. That means you can’t use a name if it’s already been claimed by another registered company in your state.

In a similar vein, you should also ensure that your favorite business name idea doesn’t infringe on any protected trademarks. These happen at the state and federal levels. To check, you can run a trademark search on the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s website. Your state website will likely also have a similar tool.

Last but not least, it’s recommended to check if your online presence is workable. First, you should check if there is a domain name available for your favorite name. A business website is essential in today’s online climate, so you want it to be easy for your customers to find you online. After that, check for social media handles that mirror your business name, too.

If you run any of these checks and find interference with your name, you should make some amendments to your name.

Legal Considerations and Registration

After you’ve picked your name, it’s time to officially register it. You have a couple different avenues for doing this, so let’s walk through the process.

Registered Businesses: File Formation Paperwork

The easiest way to legally claim a name is to register as a formal business entity like an LLC, corporation, or nonprofit (or another business type that files registration paperwork with the state). While every state varies a bit, the registration paperwork is usually called the “Articles of Organization” or the “Articles of Incorporation.”

Filing this paperwork officially forms your business in your state. It also puts your name on the state’s record, meaning all future businesses will have to create a name that’s distinct from yours.

Unincorporated Businesses: Consider Filing a DBA

If you’d rather operate as a sole proprietorship or partnership, you won’t be filing formation paperwork. Your options for claiming a business name are a bit more limited. For a lot of small business owners, filing a DBA, or “doing business as” name, is a viable option.

A DBA, sometimes called a trade name, fictitious name, or assumed name, is essentially a registered business nickname that lets you operate under a different name from your legal name.

The exact terms for a DBA vary from state to state, however. Some states protect DBAs for exclusive use, but many don’t. Some states don’t even require registration. Even if your state doesn’t protect DBAs, it’s still helpful to register one. Registering does add your name to the state’s records, which may discourage other businesses from using it.

Registering a Trademark

No matter what type of business you’re forming, you have the option to register a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. This process is expensive and complicated, but it is the best protection you can get for your name. If you choose to go this route, you’ll likely need to hire an attorney to guide you through the process.

State trademarks apply only within the borders of your state, but they’re considerably easier to get than federal trademarks. The process varies by state, but it usually involves paying a small fee and completing a form.

Branding with Your New Business Name

A good business name is only valuable if you put it to good use building your brand. You want customers to hear your name and instantly think of your business: how it makes them feel, how they visualize your customer experience, and more.

Your branding experience can start from the moment you choose a viable business name. Integrate your name into a beautiful logo. Add it into all your marketing materials: your website, your business cards, your company uniforms, and anything else customers will see when they interact with your brand.

Your brand marketing can be as simple or as elaborate as your budget and timetable allows. But what matters is having a strategy and sticking to it.
